Dr. Goldstein has conducted almost 1200 custody evaluations throughout the Chicago metro area, as well as Rockford, Champaign and Peoria. He has also conducted custody evaluations in 10 other states. Dr. Goldstein is the editor of Handbook of Child Custody (Springer, December 2015) and has written a number of chapters in books as well as articles on custody evaluations. Furthermore, he has presented numerous papers and workshops at national and international conferences on the subject. In particular, he has expertise on cases involving parental alienation or estrangement, cases involving overnight visitation with young children, cases involving suspected abuse and removal cases.
Child Abuse Evaluations
Dr. Goldstein has conducted over 300 child abuse and child sex abuse evaluations, and has served as an expert for the US government. He has presented on assessment of abuse at major conferences, including the International Congress on Law and Mental Health in Prague (July 2017) and the American College of Forensic Psychology conference in San Diego (March 2016).
Consultation
Dr. Goldstein offers consultation to attorneys on custody cases, including the review of reports and psychological testing. He also offers rebuttal testimony or an affidavit when appropriate. In child abuse cases, he reviews victim sensitive interviews for bias and flaws in the interview, and reviews records. He also serves as a consultant on jury cases involving abuse, in jury selection and trial strategy. Dr. Goldstein has also provided consultation to other agencies, having served as a consultant to numerous school systems, as well as the US military, government agencies and private companies.
Other Forensic Evaluations
Dr. Goldstein has conducted fitness for duty evaluations for a number of police departments, governmental agencies and private companies. He has also conducted social security disability evaluations for over 200 clients. In addition, Dr. Goldstein has conducted numerous immigration evaluations.
Psychotherapy
Dr. Goldstein has provided counseling to thousands of clients in his career. He specializes in the treatment of anxiety disorders and stress, having personally experienced panic disorder when he was younger. He utilizes an eclectic approach, including the use of relaxation breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, imagery, mindfulness, cognitive behavioral therapy and hypnotherapy. He also has experience in the treatment of depression, ADHD, oppositional defiant disorder and family and marital therapy.
